Mayor of Southwark's try-dive - Wednesday 25th May 2016

On Wednesday 25th May the club welcomed Kath Whittam, the Mayor of Southwark, to Seven Islands Leisure Centre to see the new dive equipment recently purchased using grant funding from Sport England, to hear about our free try-dive project in connection with our 60th anniversary, and to participate in a try-dive herself.

The Mayor met several members of the club and heard how we are trying to make the sport more inclusive and accessible. She also heard about our involvement in the This Girl Can campaign, which encourages women's and girls' participation in sport. The Mayor was able to see a typically busy Wednesday evening pool session, and how the club depend on the deep end (3.8 metres) at Seven Islands.

Once in the water, the Mayor did very well, handling the dive equipment confidently and reaching the bottom of the deep end. A future diver, perhaps! The Mayor described her try-dive as "fab".

An article about the Mayor's visit appeared in Southwark News the following week: http://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/southwark-mayor-kath-whittam-dives-celebrate-scuba-clubs-60th-seven-islands-leisure-centre/
